The Democratic Convention
Obama uses speech to assail Trump . . . President Obama Wednesday cast the election to succeed him as a “fundamental choice.” Obama soaked in the cheers and chants of “Yes we did!” from a party that, despite its divisions, remains enthralled by his charisma and vision. Obama delivered a passionate indictment of Donald Trump, casting him as a menace whose positions aren’t just on the other side of the political spectrum, but on a different spectrum all together. "This is a more fundamental choice – about who we are as a people, and whether we stay true to this great American experiment in self-government,” Obama said. His upbeat speech was meant to be a burst of sunshine in contrast to Trump’s message in Cleveland, which Obama said was not so much Republican or even conservative, but a “pessimistic vision of a country where we turn against each other.” Politico

Trump has painted a dark picture of American because Obama has left the country in a very dark place.

Obama's rose-colored glasses . . . For all his appeal as a speaker, and for all the love coming from Democrats crowded inside the Wells Fargo Arena, President Obama made a classic mistake in his address to the Democratic convention Wednesday night. Determined to defend his own accomplishments in office as well as convince Americans to elect Hillary Clinton for what would amount to his third term, Obama painted a picture of life in the United States that was brighter and more positive than most voters believe. Tim Kaine puts his attack dog collar on . . . Kaine — whose low-key nature had raised questions about whether he could be an attack dog for Clinton's campaign — knocked Trump on nearly every major controversial comment or scandal since the brash businessman launched his presidential bid. "Our nation is too great to put in the hands of slick-talking, empty-promising, self-promoting, one-man wrecking crew," the Virginia senator said. The Hill

Biden: Trump claim to know middle class "malarkey" . . . Leveling a blistering attack on Donald Trump, Vice President Joe Biden put on his rhetorical hat as “middle-class Joe” Wednesday and told Democratic delegates and millions of television viewers that the billionaire businessman “has no clue” about the needs of working-class people or what makes the nation great. “He’s trying to tell us he cares about the middle class?” Biden said at the Democratic National Convention. “Give me a break. That’s a bunch of malarkey.” New York Post

Bloomberg trashes Trump as a "dangerous demagogue."

Chelsea to provide warmup act for Hillary tonight . . . Chelsea Clinton will open for her mother at the Democratic National Convention as Clinton accepts a place in history as the first female presidential nominee for a major party. Chelsea Clinton's appearance comes after her father, ex-President Bill Clinton, gave a deeply personal address about his wife Tuesday night. Associated Press

Leftist protestor catches on fire trying to burn U.S. flag . . . Protesters at the Democratic National Convention grew even rowdier than on previous nights and a U.S. flag was lit on fire — and a protester attempting to dance on the burning flag ended up on fire. The graphic video can be seen below. Police and protesters attempted to treat the injuries and worked together to carry off the burned protester. Breitbart

The White House - DNC Pay to Play scheme . . . The Democratic National Committee’s national finance director sent a White House official who handles personnel matters a list of Democratic donors that the DNC hand-picked for appointments to federal boards and commissions. Daily Caller

Trump: I was just being sarcastic . . . Donald Trump says he was "being sarcastic" when he suggested Wednesday that Russia should find Hillary Clinton's missing emails. "Of course I'm being sarcastic. And they don't even know frankly if it's Russia," Trump said in an interview with Fox News' Brian Kilmeade set to air in full Thursday morning. Politico

Egypt, Clinton's forgotten catastrophe . . . The turmoil in Libya has been well-aired, but many forget about Egypt. “It’s quite striking that the administration was silent and showed no support for the protesters against the Iranian regime in its time of trouble in 2009, and two years later, came out in support of the rebels in Egypt,” said Daniel Pipes, president of the Philadelphia-based Middle East Forum. Pipes depicted Clinton as a “cypher,” who was an ineffective secretary of state during the Arab Spring crisis. LifeZette

Pelosi: Whites vote wrong due to guns, gays, and God . . . “I think that, so many times, white — non-college-educated white males have voted Republican. They voted against their own economic interests because of guns, because of gays, and because of God, the three G’s, God being the woman’s right to choose,” Pelosi told PBS’s Judy Woodruff in an interview Wednesday. Fox News

VA spent $20 million on art . . . “In the now-infamous VA scandal of 2012-2015, the nation was appalled to learn that 1,000 veterans died while waiting to see a doctor,” wrote Adam Andrzejewski, the founder and CEO of Open the Books, in an editorial for Forbes. “Tragically, many calls to the suicide assistance hotline were answered by voicemail. “Yet, in the midst of these horrific failings the VA managed to spend $20 million on high-end art over the last ten years—with $16 million spent during the Obama years,” Andrzejewski said. Fox News

DNC insiders detail months of escalating dysfunction . . . Debbie Wasserman Schultz wasn’t supposed to ask Joe Biden to come to her daughter’s bat mitzvah. Democratic National Committee staff had sent the chair to the vice president armed with four specific requests for getting him involved in raising money for the party. She decided to scrap them for two of her own. First, she asked Biden to do a fundraiser for her own re-election to her House seat in Florida in the primary challenge she’s facing next month. He agreed. The second was to get down to Boca Raton for the bat mitzvah. Politico

Wikileaks releases hacked DNC voicemails, but there doesn't seem to be much scandal in them, unfortunately.

Zuckerberg's billions keep growing . . . Facebook will soon be worth more than ExxonMobil — and Mark Zuckerberg will be richer than the Koch brothers. The social-networking giant’s stock soared Wednesday after its second-quarter revenue rose 59.2 percent, to $6.4 billion, crushing the consensus estimate of $6 billion, as its computer-loving, smartphone-addicted user base continues to carpet ever-wider sections of the globe. MH370 captain's simulator had Indian Ocean route . . . Australian officials confirmed on Thursday that data recovered from a home flight simulator owned by the captain of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 showed that someone had used the device to plot a course to the southern Indian Ocean, where the missing jet is believed to have crashed. More evidence that this was a giant murder-suicide by the pilot. Associated Press

Although the group is only a few months old, it has already outgrown its meeting space at the Philly Firearms Academy. Washington Free Beacon

Nasal bacteria may fight the superbug . . . Scientists searching for a solution to ever-resistant, infection-causing bacteria may have found an answer much closer to home than expected -- up our noses. Researchers from the University of Tubingen in Germany have discovered that a nose-dwelling bacteria, Staphylococcus lugdunensis, produces a chemical called lugdunin. The chemical is "bactericidal against major pathogens," and -- crucially -- not prone to developing a resistance in the bugs that it kills. CNN

Hour of exercise could save billions . . . Just one hour of moving around more than we do each day — that’s all it would take to save the global economy $67.5 billion a year in health care and productivity losses due to sedentary lifestyles, according to new research from the World Health Organization. The higher likelihood of early death from sitting for eight or more hours a day may cause as many as five million deaths each year, as reported by Reuters and others. Democratic Fart-In fails to raise much of a stink . . . Bernie Sanders supporters tried to make a stink at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday by staging a “fart-in” — but officials smelled that something was up and denied them access. Organizer Cheri Honkala, who is the national coordinator for the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign, was joined by no more than five people for the unique protest. In preparation for the protest, Sanders’ convention delegates scarfed down beans and other fiber-filled foods before arriving at the convention hall. New York Post
